Have a question about this? Bring it to Hypatia.
I want to give you one instruction that is not a practice, not a routine, not an optimization.
Go outside once this week. Not for exercise. Not for a walk that you are also using to listen to a podcast or think through a problem. Not for any purpose that a productivity system could track.
Just go outside. Stand somewhere or sit somewhere. Look at what is there. Not for long. Twenty minutes is enough.
If you reach for your phone, notice that. Do not judge it. Just notice it and put the phone away.
That is the whole instruction.
I give it not because nature is healing (though it often is) but because the person who can spend twenty minutes outside with no agenda, not optimizing anything, not being available for anything — that person still has a relationship with their own existence that is independent of their productivity.
The person who cannot do this is a person whose life has been fully colonized by function. That is worth knowing.
